I woke up this morning, and had the urge to travel. Usually at some point during the day I think about traveling somewhere. I find myself sifting through Booking.com or Expedia.com finding the cheapest places to stay or a dirt cheap plane fare. Usually, when Morgan and I discuss flights it goes something similar to the below…..
David: “Wow, we can get a flight to Iceland for $600 roundtrip in January.”
Morgan: “Yeah but who wants to go to Iceland in January? It will be negative degrees.”
Me: “I would if we could go for $600 roundtrip.”
Morgan: “Sigh”
When we discuss a place to stay it usually goes something like this:
David: “I found this awesome guest house in Phnom Penh for $8 a night.” We could literally stay here for months!”
Morgan: “Does it have AC and a private bathroom?”
David: “Ummm no it doesn’t, but I found another place that does for $10 a night.”
Morgan: “Well, you better book the $10 a night guesthouse.”
David: “Yes mam.”
These are some of the typical conversations we have sitting in bed at 9 PM at night. I also love calculating how much money we could live off of in a 3rd world country. I do it all the time, and Morgan always shoots me down. I would never move my family to Cambodia for a year to live in a hole in the wall, but I enjoy seeing if we could. I love crunching numbers and squeezing every penny out of travel.
David: “So if we stay in Hanoi, Vietnam at this guesthouse for $8 a night negotiated for 30 days….. That is $240 a month. If we shop at the market for our meals and take local transport, we could live off of an additional $300 a month. Total is $540 per month. So if we move to Hanoi, Vietnam, and stay for a year, it would only cost us $6,480!”
Morgan: “I am not living in Hanoi, Vietnam for a year.”
David: “Ok goodnight.”
I had a revelation as well today. For the first time I knew that we could buy plane tickets to anywhere in the world, pack our bags, head to the airport, travel to said country, and live for at least 3 months on what we had packed. I feel that we could do this all in the span of about 3 hours, and without any hesitation or fear. This is what gets me excited about travel, and it is why Morgan and I are married to each other.
Just some tidbits for this Sunday afternoon.
